Parenting Coordination

What is Parenting Coordination?

Parenting Coordination is a unique dispute resolution process for parents who experience high-conflict and difficulty negotiating or agreeing on basic parenting issues. Some common examples of disputes resolved through Parenting Coordination include: Vacation and holiday scheduling, making necessary adjustments to the regular time share schedule, school choice, managing and/or obtaining medical care for children, arranging childcare when one parent is unavailable, selection and logistics of extra-curricular activities, and travel requests.

The Parenting Coordinator is selected/approved by the parents, their attorneys, and then ordered by the Family Court. There are stipulations, or agreements made between the parents, their attorneys and the PC about what can be ordered by the PC, and what can only be recommended.

How Does Parenting Coordination Work?

Initial Agreement

Parents, attorneys, and PC create stipulations about decision-making authority.

Collaborative Discussion

Work together to resolve conflicts, with PC guidance when needed.

Decision & Order

When agreement isn't reached, PC makes binding decisions in child's best interest.

My Approach

My approach to Parenting Coordination is fairly simple. I want you and your co-parent to work together to make as many decisions as you can, focusing on what is in the best interest of your child(ren). As conflicts come up, I will meet with you and we will discuss the issues, and possible solutions. If you can work this out between yourselves before bringing me in, all the better.

If you remain in conflict, then I will attempt to have you work out an agreement/compromise if possible. If you both are still unable to agree, I will make the decision. Any decisions I make are focused on what is in the best interest of your child. In these instances, an order from a PC is the same as an order made by the Family Court Judge and must be followed.

I strongly encourage all parents with a high level of conflict to discuss the Parenting Coordination process with their attorneys. This will provide you with a better understanding of your rights and responsibilities.
